FROM DREAM TO DISTANCE
How to Master Your Marathon
A complete woman's guide to marathon success after 40. No experience required!
BY HELEN PHILLIPS
Before I joined Marathon Club Hub, I just went out and ran. I thought if I completed all the running in a plan, not bothering with rest, I could get round the race I was training for. But even with all the running I was doing, I always struggled to finish a race, so I wasn’t sure I’d be able to complete a marathon.
By training this way, I can run further than ever before, and I completed my first marathon without thinking, Why am I doing this? And I even enjoyed it!

FROM 6+ YEARS OF COACHING AND RUNNING 20+ MARATHONS HERSELF HELEN EXPLAINS:
Helen Phillips isn't a natural runner. She was a lazy kid at school, and hid in the music-block to avoid PE.
Inspired by the 2012 London Olympics, and with her 50th birthday fast approaching, Helen started running.
One thing led to another, and soon she was running marathons, as well as encouraging and motivating others to realise their running goals.
In 2017 Helen walked away from a stressful city job to follow her passions; running, coaching, cooking and eating.
Since then she has dedicated herself to helping mid-life women from around the world realise their long-held marathon running dreams.
Helen calls herself The Cheesecake Runner, because what would life be without cheese, cake and running? It’s all about balance!
Before I joined Marathon Club Hub, I’d run several marathons, and I’d start out strong, but I then lacked the energy to finish strongly at the end. I wanted to learn how to sort that.
I loved the strength training in the conditioning programme, the progression runs, hill-repeat workouts and such. By having a specific thing to work on in each of my midweek runs, I was able to focus and give that run my sole attention for that day.
By training this way, I took 10 minutes off of my fastest marathon time. More importantly, my splits towards the end of the race were only 15 seconds or so slower than at the start, unlike other races where I’ve crashed.
Monica, London Marathon 2024
When I got my place to run London Marathon, I’d been running for about 8 years, but I knew I wasn’t doing the right types of running to improve or to run further than 13 miles. I was just plodding around, running the same speed, run after run.
By learning about the different types of training run and why they’re so important, and then including them in my training, I can now run faster and for longer.
My greatest achievement has been running the London Marathon. I’ve also nailed a 10k PB, showing me that my overall fitness has been improved significantly through training.
Claire, London Marathon 2021
I started running in September 2021 and got a buzz out of it straight away. I entered a few 10ks and halves, but I never thought I could run a marathon. I didn’t think I had it in me. But in the end, I went from couch to marathon in 20 months!
By slowing down my training runs to run at an easy pace, I found I got faster in competitive runs and races. I got PBs at parkrun, 10k and half-marathon distances, and I’m the fittest I’ve ever been!
After running the London Marathon, I know I can do whatever I put my mind to (within reason) in all aspects of life.
